IMF leadership, policies are 'questionable': U.S. Senate majority leader

WASHINGTON (AFX-ASIA) - The leadership and policies of the IMF are
"questionable," Senate majority leader, Republican Trent Lott said on CNN.
"The policy of the IMF is very questionable, the leadership of the IMF,
in my opinion is very questionable," Lott said over the weekend.
Lott said Senate Republicans will approve 3.5 bln usd for use by the IMF
emergency loan facility, but said that the Clinton Administration's request
for an additional 14.5 bln usd is likely to be delayed until later this year
and will come with strings attached.
"I think Congress will pass the 3.5 bln," Lott said.
"As far as the additional 14.5 bln in funds, the Congress is going to add
on conditions." he said.
Lott said the Republicans want the IMF to be more transparent.
"The administration is beginning to come around" on the need for
conditions, he added.
Lott defended the delay of the 14.5 bln usd, saying the funds were not
urgent.
"If we don't get that done until later on in the year, there will be no
problem with it," he said.
