Yes, that sums it up better that I can.

If we really wished to have competition determine the market, I would propose a simple initial solution. Have Microsoft drop its IE from Windows and simply have the consumer go out and chose which one they prefered. Than it would be a level playing field. It would come down to the product and the company promoting the product through developement, advertising, marketing, and support, as it should be.

Unfortunately, that is not going to happen willingly. The only ones that are going to force that come from the DOJ. No, I don't want regulation. But it would eliminate Microsofts ability to force computer manufacturers to carry its IE over Netscape.

I guess I see the Internet as a vast highway. But to get onto the highway you have to have entrance and exit ramps. Netscape initially provided the ramps. But now you have Microsoft not only providing ramps but also effectively controlling the land the ramps would be built on, so if you wish to build another ramp, you do it at Microsofts leisure.

On an aside, some of those that have read my posts probably realize that I know a good bit about the oil industry. I have made comparisons to Gates and Rockefeller. I would recommend that you read Gergans "The Prize." Its good reading about the history of the oil industry and is pretty fascinating. When you get to the Standard Oil section, see if you don't agree in the comparison.
