Somebody, start a rebate ripoffs bookmark. I think we'd find a common experience, and collectively, get results.

Jim,

re:>>I'm beginning to wonder if the rebate game is a scam.<<

The scam is most people forget or won't take the time to take advantage of them.

Before sending in a rebate, i make copies of the UPC, rebate form, and the receipt. I keep track of all rebates until they are processed. In one case a rebate($20) was refused for a Maxell backup tape purchase from CompUSA. I went to CompUSA and showed them my documentation and the rebate refusal postcard. They apologized for the inconvenience and without further question credited the credit card i used to purchase the tapes.

Obviously I was pleased with how CompUSA handled this situtation.

I do agree rebates are a pain in the a**, but some of these rebates are significant ($20 to $80)and worth the hassle. If it takes me 5 minutes to fill out the form and make copies of a $20 rebate, it's the equivalent of making $240/hour. Remember it's your money!

p.s. oh yea, don't forget the $0.32 stamp

In GENERAL, I think that what happens with rebates is not the result of INTENT to defraud. However I think that intent aside, there is negligence to the point that it becomes actionable. Iomega is finding out about this; CompUSA SHOULD have a similar experience. Where are the lawyers when you need them ?
