Actually, Ibexx, CPQ is just now integrating Tandem numbers, so it may be a charge related to Tandem. I read somewhere that revenues were revised upwards to reflect Tandem numbers, so I am speculating about the EPS.

Ibexx: 'am afraid not as we are talking here about 98-Q1,merger costs are yet to come possibly in Q2 or Q3 depending on when the merger actually takes place.

I believe they always refer to OPERATING EARNINGS before any one-time charges due to whatever cause.

The Wall Street Estimates also are Operating Earnings.

You hear it all the time on CNBC, "factor out such and such one time charge, the operation EPS is actually such and such and is actually beat estimate by such and such cents ... blah blah blah".
