Thanks James, but I don't think that upgradeability is the issue. It really boils down to the fact that Intel has been able to exact 'economic rent' (fund manager term, but true) from purchasers via it's 60% gross margins for years due to it's market position. If that position is broken, then Intel joins the Compaq's of the world. Look at current market cap - CPQ, about Intel's size now in sales, substantially larger if you add DEC, has a current market cap of around 38 billion. I have not checked Intel's lately, but last I heard it was around 150 billion. My guess is that Intel really did not want to come out with a product called 'Celeron'!!!
