E: Thanks. From that same article, there are some manufacturers for DIVX! Still I think it may not be very successful (we can hope that it won't be) ---- DIVX Adds Another Partner Last week Pioneer announced that it is licensing the Divx technology, and plans to have a player available in mid-1999. Pioneer will join Matsushita, JVC, Zenith, and Thomson in supplying Divx players. These companies are agreeing to manufacture Divx players with the belief that some of their customers will want the option of playing Divx disks. Digital Video Express, a partnership between Circuit City and an entertainment law firm, has plans to develop DVD disks that can be reused or disposed. The technology, called Divx, will allow consumers to pay less than $5 for a disk, which can be viewed as many times as wanted during a 48-hour window after the first viewing. After the 48-hour time period has elapsed, an electronic payment via a modem will allow the movie to be unlocked so it can be viewed again. If the consumer chooses to have unlimited viewing they could pay a one time fee of under $20. The companies involved want to discourage disk rentals and instead encourage consumers to build video libraries. Though Divx can be played on multiple players as long as they are all on the same billing account, In-Stat still believes that consumers will be wary. Movies that have been purchased for unlimited viewing will have to be played only on players that are billed to the same account. Consumers will not be able to loan someone else a disk. Divx will also require a connection to a phone line and many homes do not have a phone connection in the living room. ---- Shane.
