This was also in your CalStart URL. I don't know the source of Ballard's membranes, but this has to be good news. The article in Business Week mentioned that costs of the cells have to be brought down to 10% of current levels. -- Bob

03/03/98 - DuPont May Cut Fuel-Cell-Material Price by 90%
Detroit, Illinois - DuPont Automotive says it could cut the price of a key material used in fuel cells as much as 90 percent when fuel-cell vehicle production reaches 150,000 units-per year volumes, reports Automotive News. The company's "Nafion" polymer film is used for membranes in fuel-cell stacks; it currently sells for $500 per square meter. Michael Quah, a DuPont manager working on alternative energy projects, says volume production of fuel-cell vehicles would dramatically cut material costs to the point where the company could sell Nafion for as low as $50 per square meter. NASA has been using the material in its satellite fuel cells since the early 1960s. Fuel cells convert various fuels into electricity in an electrochemical process that does not use combustion; when operated on hydrogen, the only emissions are heat and pure water.
