Cytokine, here is the list of companies in BTK (from amex.com ):

Index ComponentsThe Biotechnology Index is composed of shares of the following issues:ÿAdvanced Tissue Life Sciences(ATIS)Genzyme Corporation (GENZ)ÿAmgen Inc. (AMGN)Gilead Sciences Inc. (GILD)ÿBiogen, Inc.(BGEN)Immune Response Corporation(IMNR)ÿBio-Technology General Corp.(BTGC)Immunex Corporation(IMNX)ÿCentocor Inc. (CNTO)Organogenesis Inc. (ORG)ÿCephalon, Inc. (CEPH)Protein Design Labs, Inc. (PDLI)ÿChiron Corporation (CHIR)Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Inc.(VRTX)ÿCOR Therapeutics, Inc. (CORR)ÿ

In theory, IXB is more representative, but in practice, because it is capitalization-weighted (BTK is readjusted every quarter to keep it dollar-weighted), it ends up reflecting Amgen, Genzyme, Biogen and little else. OTOH since BTK has so few companies good or bad news in a given company, for example CORR a few weeks ago, can have a huge effect.

I find both indices useful.

PB

Yahoo and some of the other quote services tend to use weird preface symbols for funds, indices, etc.... One of the problems is that each net site tends to have a unique symbol shared by no other, so what is ^IXB on Yahoo, is something entirely else on a different site. Since these are not exchange assigned symbols, it seems that a lot of variety has taken root. You have to be creative at seeking out the symbols using searches, etc....
