from Briefing today:

HEWLETT-PACKARD (HWP) 60 3/4 -13/16: Computer maker is being pulled down by the Compaq earnings warning and overall weakness in the PC market. However, Gruntal & CO. has re-iterated a "buy" rating on the stock. They say that conversations with HWP management this morning indicate that HWP is in better shape than the other PC makers in part because PCs account for a small part of HWP's overall profits. In addition, they say that HWP has reduced its inventories and that management was aware of Compaq's problems and has planned possible price pressures. Recent rating changes on HWP involve Merrill Lynch upgrading from "neutral" to "attractive" on February 23 and Deutsche Morgan initiating coverage with an "accumulate" rating on January 12. The stock price has languished in recent months as HWP has reported earnings below expectations each of the past three quarters, with the most recent report on February 17 showing earnings of $0.86 a share, two cents below the consensus. HWP currently trades at 20.6 times trailing earnings as earnings have grown 14% over the past 12 months.

Nice early run-up or "relative strength" for HWP in the sector today. This may explain some of it:

Hewlett-Packard to offer its own Java-WSJ

NEW YORK, March 20 (Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co is
expected to announce Friday it plans to market its own variant
of Java software, breaking with Sun Microsystems Inc
and opening a rift in an industry alliance against Microsoft
Corp , the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
The Journal reported in its electronic edition that
Hewlett-Packard has developed its own specifications and
software for running Java programs on a range of electronic
devices, including its computer printers.
Hewlett-Packard now plans to compete with Sun, the creator
of Java, by seeking customers for its technology, the paper
said. It already has signed up Microsoft, the Journal said.
Microsoft has agreed to use Hewlett-Packard's Java version
with its Windows CE operating system, the paper said.
The moves are a blow to Sun's bid to control the evolution
of Java and come just days before a Sun-sponsored conference in
San Francisco that is expected to draw more than 10,000 Java
software programmers, the Journal said.
Hewlett-Packard opted to act independently after getting fed
up with what the company viewed as excessive licensing fees Sun
is seeking for a consumer-electronics version of Java.
