Per Fowler, "lots" is used with a singular verb unless "of" is used with it:

There is lots to do.

Lots of people think so.


Also, I'm not sure what the rule is, but we often see "less" misused:

We have less automobiles than we used to have.(Instead of the correct fewer.) I think "less" is used for amounts, "fewer" for number.
