ASIASAT 3S Replacement Satellite Announced On March 8, 1998, Asia Satellite Telecommunications Company Limited (AsiaSat) announced the appointment of Hughes Space and Communications International, Inc. to build an identical replacement satellite for AsiaSat 3, which was lost during launch on 25 December, 1997. The new satellite, which is designated AsiaSat 3S, will be launched in the first quarter of 1999. A Russian Proton rocket will launch AsiaSat 3 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan subject to satisfactory results from the final results of the failure investigation (see related story in this issue). AsiaSat received a total compensation of US$ 200 million from its launch insurance providers. This compensation is being used to fund the procurement, launch and insurance of the new AsiaSat 3S replacement satellite. Hughes Space and Communications, Inc. normally requires a minimum lead time of fifteen months to design and construct a communications satellites. The shortened schedule for AsiaSat 3S is due to the fact that the replacement satellite will be identical in all respects to AsiaSat 3, thereby eliminating the time in the schedule required for design work. "Customers on AsiaSat 1 will continue to operate at the orbital location of 105.5 degrees east longitude, with the short delivery of AsiaSat 3S ensuring our ability to continue to expand our service from that location prior to the end of life of AsiaSat 1," said Mr. Peter Jackson, AsiaSat's Chief Executive Officer. "We are confident that the Proton experts will undertake all necessary measures to ensure a successful launch for AsiaSat 3S," he added.
