Aki, think about it, anyone can copy Dell's plan. "Call me up and I'll build you a computer". CPQ just gambled in keeping the channel full and lost. I understand why they did it, just wish management had been more honest about it. "Keep the shelves full for Christmas". They now have 100 days inventory out there to Dell's ten. But really, the good part about this mess is they must finally learn their lesson and get inventory down. Much pain in the meantime.
I know you're a long-tem thinker so what will Dell do when everyone copies their BTO model? Dell is strictly a boxmaker. I can build a box myself better than they can (really). Now that CPQ will finally, after much (short-tem) pain to me and all other stockholders, take that advantage away, what will Dell do? I know they are a Wall St.
darling but CPQ is ready to eat their lunch. CPQ will cut all the fat from DEC and be a one stop, full service company. Dell will be a boxmaker. BTW, DEC is actually making money now. CPQ stole it. Check out the DEC thread if you don't believe me. This is a master stroke. If the shareholders of DEC reject the buyout, their stock will give up the $10 it gained on the buyout announcement, so I doubt it will happen (bird in the hand and all).
