George - Re: ".Pfeiffer, I'm afraid, will try to hit the corporate arena with bargain basement pricing also..."

I'll bet the price cuts are already in motion. Look for them this coming week.

Re: "I'd really like to think DELL won't succumb to this cesspool of cutthroat competition and end up losing money like CPQ is doing..

You never know - Dell has good corporate loyalty at a lot of accounts. However, business is reality and I'm sure price cuts are coming.

On the brighter side for Dell, Intel is about to launch some high end CPUs - Deschutes/Slot 1 and Slot 2 with the 440BX 100 MHz chip set, and a low end CPU - Celeron - so DELL may be able to drop prices on Celeron models and go head to head with Compaq's bottom-of-the-barrel sales. They can reap some cream off the top with a fast launch of their own Slot 1 and Slot 2 machines.

Dell can maintain profits throughout all of this because they do not have a large pipeline of unsold inventory sitting on dealer's shelves - since they have no dealers!
