Long term, yes, but they are going to suffer severe pain. They have a glut of inventory - so they are going to cut prices FURTHER!

That will reduce revenues and profits even more severely in the next months and quarter.

Compaq needs to rethink their way of doing business. They have instituted a half-*ssed BTO system that clearly is an abortion. Michael Dell laughed at their concept about 6 months ago when Compaq first proposed it.

Michael Dell is really laughing now!

Re: DEC merger - they are in trouble here as well. Compaq has a major commitment to Merced so the Alpha business is going to wind down.
DEC's PC business seems to be a big overlap with Compaq - but at a very much smaller level.

Perhaps the service side of the business will bring them some revenue - but I'm not that familiar with that part of DEC's business.
