This
would be a real joke. Intel will have the Merced running in a .18um process
at about 600mhz while AMD is bringing on the K7 running at 333mhz.
<<

Yousef-

Aren't Katmai and Willamette the K7 competition, not Merced, in as much as they are all IA-32? Will they both start out at 0.25, or will they be on the 0.18 process also?

Jim

Yousef:

<<This is an incorrect statement ... AMD may have a high density process, but they have a low performance FET coupled to a high density/Rs interconnect. This is the reason that AMD needs a .25um process to just achieve > 266mhz. This is far from a "world class" process.>>

The more you try to extrapolate information without any data the more it shows of your little understanding. You are trying to gauge process technology based on "FET coupled to a high density/Rs interconnect". This is full of shit and has no merit what so ever.

<<This is the reason that AMD needs a .25um process to just achieve > 266mhz.>>

Speed depends on architecture as well as process. If you eliminate architecture then you understand nothing of CPU making. Perhaps you can enlighten me why the Alpha chip runs at >600MHz and PII only reach
333Mhz. Is it because Intel has far from a "world class" process than DEC? If you can't address that question then don't continue with the discussion.

<<Are you saying that AMD will bring out the K7 in their .25um process ... This would be a real joke. Intel will have the Merced running in a .18um process at about 600mhz while AMD is bringing on the K7 running at 333mhz.>>

How do you know K7 will run at 333MHz at 0.25um process? K6-3D at 0.25um already running at 350MHz. Please try to dig into the facts before you make a conclusion. You should already have learned that back at school.

Yousef: I'm looking forward to my 0.18um Merced machine runing at 600MHz and costing $1000. Yeh right.
