Joe, I may be spouting garbage here, but you tell me what you think.

There are two groups of ORCL longs: those who think it's an absolutely kick-ass database company that has, as it should, a near-stranglehold on that market. I'm in this group.

Another group has bought into the seemingly unrelated NC vision and hope that Ellison will spearhead the development of the device. These people are not confused by that Oracle TV commercial with the slo-mo bombs exploding and the Asian people fleeing on mopeds (presumably home to surf the web). I'm not in that group, but I'll switch the moment it seems to catch on.

I take it from your <sigh....> that you're in group #1, like me. Well, all I can say is that I hope the NC doesn't turn out to be a harmful distraction from what I think Oracle's primary market is, which is databases. Sure, database technology and network computers will mesh well, but not so well that I refrain from the use of the term "distraction."

I also hope that Ellison's interest in the NC isn't a symptom of some fundamental problem with Oracle in its present state (e.g., Ellison believing that he's sure to lose the upcoming database war with MSFT).
