I think the situation that has played out with Intel and Compaq has been and inventory correction from too much in the channel for compaq.
This obviously has significant effect on Intel since compaq is a one of Intel top four Pentium consumers. I also think that the box makers will come under margin pressures due to the aggressive pricing recently.
The net effect on IDTI is only positive at the moment (though it is not a big impact on their business at the moment). As the Sub-1000 market heats up more vendors will look to reduces UMC and a prime place is the processor. Why do you think Intel has jumped through hoops to do Celeron. This reconfirms IDTI's strategy. With the forthcoming introduction of Hydra from MS, this will drive the Sub-500 boxes it which IDTI is extrememly well positioned with both C6 and Mips processor lines.
Not much mention of Mips lately on this thread (all the talk lately is about when people sold their stock), but there are good things to come in 98. All I can say.
By the way techically IDTI has had great strength lately and truly expected the stock to pull way back given the 75% run up in Jan and Feb.

I've just heard rumors about a possible Intel buy-out. I don't think much of the speculation - find it hard to see much of real interest to Intel.
