VST Zip Drive wins Windows Sources Magazine Stellar award Sorry, it's not online yet. I had to type this from the mag. From Windows Sources, April 1998 p. 74 VST Tech's Zippy Solution Vst Technologies has successfully repackaged Iomega's Zip 100 storage technology for high-end IBM ThinkPads with its Zip100 Drive. This device is designed to be inserted in the ThinkPad's UltraBay. We tested the $349.95 Zip100 with a ThinkPad 760CD under Windows NT 4, Windows 95, and the beta of Windows NT 5; and we got the performance we'd expect from an IDE Zip drive. The Zip100 Drive was easy to install. First we popped out the device that came in the UltraBay, and replaced it with the Zip100. Under Windows 95 and Windows NT 5 (Beta 1), Plug and Play found the new hardware and installed the proper drivers before reading the bundled Zip disk, so we could install bundled Zip Tools. Under Windows NT 4, we had to run an installation utility, which we copied along with drivers from a floppy disk to the hard disk. Under all the operating systems, the ThinkPad recognized the Zip100 as a removable media device and treated it as a local hard disk. Under both NT operating systems, we had to wait until the OS confirmed a shutdown before we could remove a Zip disk. When we removed a Zip disk before the "Safe to turn off your computer" message appeared, we got a system error, as NT couldn't confirm that all writes to the drive were complete. Though it's a little pricey (a standard Zip drive only costs about $129), the Zip100 greatly improves a ThinkPad's mobile storage options and makes it easy to exchange large chunks of data between your ThinkPad and any Zip-enabled desktop - David Chernicoff ABOUT . . .
