Michelle,>>>I wonder how many of you really know about the internal infrastructure of Dell. They have made little or no investment in infrastructure, really. Their order management system still runs on a 15 year old mainframe.<<<

The last time I ordered from Dell, I remember calling concerning delivery dates and making changes to the order. Each time they were able to tell me the current status of the order and who I spoke with concerning the changes I kept making to my order.

If they could do this with their 15 year old mainframe system, it seems like they could also derive all related information to manage the order entry through the delivery and after sales follow up cycle; including accounts receivable, WIP, parts and component JIT inventory control and cost of sales management.

The 15 year old system is probably written in assembly language and response time is terrific. I could understand why response time with Oracle and SAP could cause their system to slow down significantly.

Now I know why Michael Dell is so successful. He is not going to make changes without a real good ROI rationale. Don't bs ole Michael with Larry Ellison type hype. Besides, if it ain't broke, be very very careful about making any drastic changes.
