Along those same lines, I recommend an excellent book which I read in one afternoon last weekend - "The Gorilla Game". Authored by three high tech investment professionals (including Geoffrey Moore who wrote "Crossing the Chasm"), it describes the attributes of "Gorilla" companies - those who are or have the opportunity to dominate an industry segment. The key gorillas are those within enabling technology layers - semiconductors (Intel etc.) hardware (Cisco)and operating systems (MSFT). Application software, while still able to produce dominators, is too fragmented to produce these types of gorillas. Within the op sys group though, are various 'enabling software segments' that are categorized as enabling technology. One of these is Security Software. At the conclusion of the book, they pick their next potential gorillas and Security Dynamics is one of the companies.

They are creating a Web site to monitor their portfolio and provide additional info. The site is www.gorillagame.org (might be changed to .com - check both) I spoke with the publishers and they expect the site to be up this week.
