According to someone who follows Compaq closely, it continually tanks and goes up. One of the worst apparently was in 1991 when it tanked 2/3, from the 70's to the 20's and stayed there for almost 2 years. Yet over a longer time, holders still made money.
Dell is quite amazing, and with the numbers deserves to be insulated from this down today, but is down anyway. (Wont stay there I reckon.) I have friends who have chosen to buy a Dell computer too, and love the $99 two year come to your house service agreement. I'll get a Dell next time too.
