Well, I really doubt that only 1% of those modems are 56 K,
or at least SAY 56 K on them or their software somewhere.

Problem is the phone lines and switches. I have a 33.6 K
modem but I've NEVER had a 33.6 connection to local ISPs.

So if they bother to look, they might say I'm using either
a 28.8 or a 31.2 modem.

Most people I know who've upgraded their 33.6 modems say
it was a waste of time and money. These people could be
good candidates for cable modem or xDSL service.

But I have to agree with you that nationwide low-cost high-speed
net access is years away. And I'm in a very remote place
as far as internet goes (e.g., SPRINT, AT&T, MCI, Earthlink,
UUNET, and COMPUSERVE all have NO local dial-up numbers for
their ISP service--and the toll call to them in Maui or Oahu is
almost as expensive as calling the Mainland--only majors
with local numbers were IBM and GTE, and I have never even
considered signing up with AOL).

But they have WebTV here!

And, finally, I'm not sure that you're right that The
Street's gonna just shrug off this rumor/news about
AT&T and TCI joining forces to push cable modem as
an ISP. Since when do the brokerage house anals ever
think things through in any detail? It's all greed and
fear knee-jerk reactions to get excuses to buy or sell.

What's the knee-jerk response gonna be is my question.
