Frederick,

This "Joe" guy sounds like he's reading the first centimeter of this emerging story.

I don't claim to be an expert. The extend of my expertise is whatever is on the web pages of various service providers plus one or 2 threads on SI.

Joe, did you know that Nextel's technology is digital - the equivalent of PCS. Its version of TDMA is more central to GSM and will link to W-CDMA - the new version of TDMA coming that doesn't not match the Qualcom CDMA standard.

Why don't they call it W-TDMA?

This poses a very BIG pickle for the many PCS providers here who have already bet the ranch on CDMA. The US CDMA ranch is at a dead end right now.

Let's assume you are right. Where does it leave Nextel? Does Nextel have some way to broaden the market? Are they licensing the technology to other companies? Or do you think Nextel is going to single-handedly beat Lucent, Motorola, Nortel, Ericson, Nokia, AT&T, Qualcomm, Sprint, Primeco etc?

While it's possible that world will be give up cellular phones and start using 2 way radios, that possibility is very remote.

Ok, so Bell Atlantic offers a $10 dispatch service - I say BIG deal! Fact is, BellAT cannot match Nextel's Direct Connect group conferencing feature.

BTW, it's $40. Basic digital plan $30 + $10 for unlimited mobile to mobile. About the group conference, even though Bell Atlantic doesn't have it now, it doesn't mean that they won't have it in the future, if there is demand. THe 3-way calling feature can be used to connect a small group, but it is not as easy as Nextel's.
