Many people have said buy in the fall and sell in the spring.

I disagree. Buy in the spring and sell in the fall.

I believe if you were to check out the Toronto Oil and Gas Composite, or better yet -- the Oil & Gas Producers Index, over the last 5 years you would find oils peaked mid-year and fell over the following 6-8 month period. The one exception was wild and whacky 1996. That's when shares climbed (no matter what sector you were in) from start to finish of the year. If you got into oils in the spring of the year, you made some serious money. There was a drastic turndown in share prices during the later half of 1993 and 1997.

I will attempt to find a longer term chart to verify my point of view.
