Also see the Quote in MS NBC story:
" Compaq, in particular, will be hard hit by the price wars because the company has a bloated 5 to 7-week inventory level in computer stores. "The company has to offer rebates to its distributors and resellers if it reduces prices on this inventory. That clearly does not allow them to price competitively with others, like Dell, that are not exposed to any channel inventory," said analyst Richard Gardner of Salomon Smith Barney.

Dell is immune to this inventory buildup because it sells directly to customers, making it easier to control prices.
