Rod,
I agree with everything you said, but I am not so sure Microsoft is going to try to hold the Java standard hostage to their plans. They may have lost the momentum on any plans they had for that. Of course, that doesn't mean people won't buy Microsoft J-whatever because the Microsoft name practically guarantees market share, as I think you've noted here.
