Kurlack doesn't cover Cpq, that idiot Lucy Painter does, the oblivious perma bull. Intel's results are probably looking worse than they thought, though they knew and telegraphed that margins were coming down. I suspect the Compaq situation was much worse than they expected or knew. I also suspect that Compaq thought it could stuff/discount its way out of its inventory buildup problems, as it has in the past. CHanging consumer demand and the steamroller towards lower prices anyway have bitten them hard. I think Compaq has a nasty period ahead of itself. It was obvious to me six months ago that they were gonna have problems in their transition from a retail channel model to a hybrid (and I thought poorly thought out or at least communicated) quasi build to order quasi direct model. The integration issues with Digital only compound matters. What makes you think that Compaq will magically turn around on a dime a company that has been loosing share and going steadily downhill for at least 10 years. MAYBE eventually, but not for some while. And probably not until a considerable amount more of Digital bloodletting and rationalization has occured.....which further raises issues of whether they overpaid.... I've vastly preferred Dell for over a year; more so now than ever. Doug
