cpq and hwp are switching to build-to-order, therefore they REDUCE inventories.
barret said that there may still be a little carryover BUT NOT
SUBSTANTIAL!
He also only mentioned that intel would be affected SHORT-TERM and
in the first Quarter.
I'd like to hear more opinions about this.
the reason with the switch sounds logical and means that intel
will soon sell more CPUs again. also the introduction of
mircrosoft 98 will have an impact.

Companies such as Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) and Hewlett-Packard Co. (HWP), which are moving to a build-to-order distribution model, were expected to cut back on orders as they reduced inventories last year. Yet Barrett indicated that the shift was to build-to-order strategy was no longer affecting the company.

"I think there may be a little bit of that carryover (from the attempts to shrink inventories), but I don't think it's substantial," he said.
