German fight looms on Net

FRANKFURT--Deutsche Telekom is planning to
commit billions of dollars to Internet telephony in an
effort to fend off AT&T, according to a report
today.
The management board has reportedly
recommended investment of more than $18 billion
in available technology that allows telephone
connections to be routed over the Internet.
An advance copy of a report to be published in the
news magazine Focus tomorrow said Telekom
would invest in technology being developed in the
United States, Japan, and Hong Kong this year.

One reason for the rush is that AT&T is planning to
offer an Internet telephony service in the next few
months. This offer means that every telephone
call--whether to Berlin or Australia--would cost
several cents per minute, the magazine said.
Regulation of Internet telephony has eluded
governments worldwide thus far. In January, the
European Commission said phone calls over the
Internet are not yet sophisticated enough to fall
under European Union rules on voice telephone.
But once technology improves, the commission
added, Internet service providers could be subject
to the same licensing and public service obligations
as competing phone companies. The U.S.
government has made no such indication for
American companies.

( $18 bil would be a nice boost to VoIP this year, can't wait until ASND makes a formal rollout this month?)
