Hi Grayhairs,

Text below taken from the ESSO Web-site. Provides some insight into the companies direction.

Jim P

Imperial is strengthening its resource base and ensuring future profitability in two main ways. First, by exploring for and developing new reserves of natural gas. And second, by investing in research and technology development focused on further developing the potential of Alberta's vast oil sands.

Exploration is the principal means of replacing produced reserves of conventional oil and gas. The company continues to explore for new reserves of natural gas. Research and technology development is the principal mechanism for renewal and growth in the oil sands. Alberta's oil sands reserves are enormous. But only a small percentage is economical to produce with today's technology. Research will provide the technology required to bring more of this vast resource into production. It is estimated that every additional one percent of Alberta's oil sands brought into production represents a revenue source of $170 billion.

Click on the following areas for more information on Imperial's renewal and growth strategies:

Exploration and natural gas development <Picture> The company's exploration efforts are focused exclusively on finding and developing new, low-cost reserves of natural gas.

Research and technology development <Picture> Research activities cover a broad spectrum of technology to support all natural resources operations, with a major emphasis on environmental protection and oil-sands development.

Exploration and natural gas development

Imperial believes the remaining undiscovered conventional oil potential in western Canada does not justify continued exploration. Undiscovered gas potential, however, is significant. As a result, Imperial's exploration efforts are focused on selected areas of western Canada with potential to produce large, low supply-cost gas reserves that can be brought to market quickly. Activities center on acquiring promising lands and developing high-quality drilling prospects. The company also drills numerous exploitation wells to develop additional gas reserves near existing discoveries.
