3Com Incorporates Counterpoint Systems Foundry's IrDA Infrared
Software in the Next Generation Palm Computing Platform Device
09:03 a.m. Mar 09, 1998 Eastern

CORVALLIS, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 9, 1998--

Counterpoint's infrared protocol stack enables wireless

unit-to-unit data exchange for the new Palm III Connected

Organizer

Counterpoint Systems Foundry, Inc., the worldwide leader in IrDA infrared
software, today announced that Palm Computing, Inc., a 3Com company, has
embedded Counterpoint's IrDA infrared protocol stack into the new Palm III
Connected Organizer.

With this software Palm III Organizer users can now easily send and receive
information without wires or cables using a convenient IR port. Palm III Organizers
can exchange files or applications with each other as easily as a remote control
talks to a TV. The infrared communications software also enables the development
of additional wireless uses such as printing, synchronizing with the desktop or
laptop, and sharing data with other IrDA devices.

"The ability to point two Palm III Connected Organizers at each other and
exchange data is a wonderful enhancement," stated John E. Duffy, director of
technology at Edify Corporation. "There have been countless times where I have
had to 'write' in a contact name provided by another PalmPilot organizer user.
Being able to 'point and shoot' my business card or other critical files is very
convenient. It's great to see Counterpoint enabling this type of ease-of-use feature."

Counterpoint's JetBeam product is an infrared protocol stack that matches the
complete IrDA 1.1 (Infrared Data Association) specification. Available in binary
versions ported to major operating systems or as portable source code, JetBeam is
designed specifically for the embedded market so it is very small and highly reliable.

"Counterpoint's technology extends the Palm Computing platform into a new area
of infrared capabilities," said Mark Bercow, vice president of strategic alliances and
platform development at Palm Computing, a 3Com company. "We are impressed
with Counterpoint's contributions to the IrDA standards and their ongoing leadership
to further develop infrared technology."

"When we started Counterpoint we envisioned a world of vastly simplified
communications, with personal electronic appliances 'beaming' data to each other
and a myriad of other intelligent devices at the push of a button. The implementation
of the IrDA technology in the Palm III Organizer represents a huge step forward in
realizing this vision," said Pat Megowan, president and co-founder of Counterpoint
Systems Foundry, Inc. "It is now possible for the Palm III Organizer to talk
wirelessly to many other products from a variety of industries -- consumer
electronics, industrial, scientific, medical, and computers."

In addition to the Palm III Connected Organizer, Counterpoint's infrared software is
also designed into numerous other personal electronic products such as digital
cameras, pagers, cellular phones, and computer peripherals. Counterpoint Systems
Foundry, Inc.

Headquartered in Corvallis, Counterpoint is the world's leading provider of IrDA
infrared communications software. Founded in 1995, Counterpoint is committed to
providing leading edge, efficient, and high quality infrared communications software
and applications. Counterpoint's founders are pioneers of the Infrared Data
Association (IrDA) community and the Company continues to author, extend, and
promote the IrDA standards.

Counterpoint operates as a wholly owned, independent subsidiary of Extended
Systems Inc., a Delaware corporation headquartered in Boise, Idaho. ESI provides
distributed and mobile computing solutions that address the needs of the virtual
enterprise, which includes infrared products.
