!NTERPRISE Networking's National Data and DSL Rollout

DENVER, March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- U S WEST !NTERPRISE (NYSE: USW)
Networking today applauded Cisco Systems' (Nasdaq: CSCO) announcement that it
has signed a definitive agreement to acquire NetSpeed, Inc., noting that the
acquisition will enable U S WEST to further strengthen its national data
strategy by allowing it to jointly develop IP-centric applications and
increase its DSL service's speed to market.
In January 1998, U S WEST announced its strategic partnership with Cisco
to provide advanced ATM switching and other capabilities to power U S WEST's
next-generation national data network. U S WEST also announced in January
that it would use NetSpeed central office and modem equipment as part of its
MegaBit Services ADSL offering in more than 40 cities throughout its 14-state
region (view the release on-line at

"Cisco's plan to acquire NetSpeed will enable U S WEST to accelerate the
deployment of DSL services," said Joe Zell, president, U S WEST !NTERPRISE
Networking. "Clearly, NetSpeed will benefit from having a company with the
manufacturing and operational strength of Cisco behind it, which in turn will
help it to meet the enormous demand we are anticipating from our MegaBit DSL
service."
As part of its previously announced strategic relationship, Cisco and U S
WEST will also jointly develop new network-enabled services such as Internet
Protocol (IP) telephony, fax and multimedia applications for a range of
national business customers. Now, Cisco will be able to offer a complete end-
to-end DSL solution to connect customers to these applications on U S WEST's
national network at speeds up to 7 Mbps.
"As strategic partners, U S WEST and Cisco have worked together on many
fronts to bring advanced services to market," said Kevin Kennedy, vice
president and general manager of Cisco's Network-to-User business unit. "Our
acquisition of NetSpeed and further entry into the DSL market will enable us
to work even closer with U S WEST."
