3Com to introduce new Palm Pilot tomorrow
New York Times - Posted at 11:58 p.m. PST Sunday, March 8, 1998

3Com Corp. plans to introduce an enhanced version of its Palm Pilot
hand-held electronic organizer Monday as it prepares for Microsoft's
entry into the market for such devices later this year.

Current versions of the Palm Pilot, priced from $250 to $370, have
become information-age fashion accessories. The new Palm III, which
will be available in April, is to cost $399.

The new version will be slightly thinner than its predecessor and will
include an infrared beaming capability to exchange information with
similarly equipped devices; an increase in memory from one to two
megabytes, permitting the storage of 6,000 names; a new industrial
design, including an added screen cover, and a file-linking feature that
permits users to import data automatically from anywhere on their
personal computers.

The Palm Pilot leads the market for hand-held organizers, with a 66
percent share, according to Dataquest, the San Jose research firm. But
3Com is girding for the entry of Microsoft into the market with the
introduction, beginning in May, of its Palm PC, which will use a
scaled-down version of the Windows operating system, Windows CE.

PC-TEL Announces 56K ITU Standard V.90 HSP Modem; Softmodem Solution
To Support Both ITU V.90 and K56Flex Modes
09:05 a.m. Mar 09, 1998 Eastern

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 9, 1998--PC-TEL Inc., developer
of the host signal processing (HSP) modem technology found in more than 3 million
PCs, Monday announced that it will soon begin shipping International
Telecommunications Union (ITU) V.90 compliant 56K data/14.4K fax modems.

The modems will be priced at $35 in OEM quantities. Initial release is planned for
early April, with mass production beginning in early June 1998.

The PC-TEL Host Signal Processing (HSP) Dualmode 56K will be compatible with
both the V.90 standard agreed to by the ITU, and with the K56Flex technology
already adopted by millions of users. The modem includes a dualmode feature that
will automatically negotiate a connection with both V.90 and K56Flex Internet
Service Providers (ISP) sites. This provides OEMs the added value of providing a
modem solution that will continue to be compatible with the K56Flex technology
while ISPs make the transition to support the ITU V.90 standard.

"PC-TEL'S patented host signal processing technology allows us to provide a quick
time-to-market ITU solution as compared to traditional DSP-based modem
solutions," said Steve Manuel, vice president, marketing, PC-TEL. "The flexibility of
our software-based solution makes it possible for us to provide an inter-operable
platform for our OEM partners and provide consumers with both high-speed
modem functionality and a simple, software upgrade path."

PC-TEL participated in the final ITU deliberations in Geneva which set the V.90
standard, and the company is committed to working with the participatory
organizations to expedite an international 56Kbps standard.

"PC-TEL is currently testing its V.90 HSP modem by connecting to 3Com's V.90
Internet site to ensure the highest level of performance for our customers," said
Shawn Owens, marketing communications manager at PC-TEL. Current customers
of modems manufactured with the PCT388 modem chip set, which has been
shipping since May 1997, will be easily upgradeable via software to the new ITU
V.90 standard.

The PCT388 features K56Flex and V.90 standards-upgradeable data/fax/voice and
HSP Speakerphone and is functional under all major consumer operating systems
(Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0 and NT 5.0). The modem works with any
full-duplex sound chip, supports online DOS-based game-playing and offers V.80
support for H.324 (POTS) video conferencing. The PCT388's low power
consumption also makes it ideal for use in notebook and hand-held personal
computers. A PCI-based modem, the PCT789, is also available from PC-TEL.
Understanding Softmodem Technology

Most of today's personal computers use hardware-based modems with a DSP
(Digital Signal Processor) chip to perform the signal-processing functions critical to
modem operations. These modems typically must either be replaced or sent back to
the manufacturer for new functionality to be added.

By contrast, PC-TEL's softmodem technology is software-based. Modem
functionality is created by simply using some of the unused instruction cycles
created by the host computer's CPU (central processing unit). PC-TEL's
softmodem technology harnesses the enormous power of today's advanced CPUs,
such as Intel's Pentium with MMX enhancements. PC-TEL's advanced HSP
technology provides end users and OEMs alike with a software-based solution far
more flexible than a DSP.

PC-TEL's modem products are software-upgradeable for speed, features and
enhancements, eliminating the need to ever "swap out" a modem. For example,
PC-TEL's popular PCT388 modem supports basic data/fax/voice communication.
Additional features, such as HSP Speakerphone, can be supported if the PC has a
full duplex audio card. About PC-TEL
