And if the investor had chosen a 100/0 stock/bond portfolio, he would have been up 181% by the end of 1981, even after that wrenching 40% decline in the 1973-74 bear, compared to the 117% returns of the (hypothetical) investor capable of perfect market-timing.

What all of this implies is that even God Almighty (or Brinker -- of course, to some people they are one and the same! ;-) ) would find it difficult to beat someone who rides through a bear market, fully-invested in a broadly diversified portfolio.
