Jules - Re: "Does this represent your adoption of the notion of sub $1000 related impact on intel?"

The current impact on Intel is that Compaq's production rate has been cut to near zero due to problems created by Compaq. Since Compaq is Intel's single largest customer, it has had a swift and severe impact on Intel.

As for sub $1000 PCs, Intel can sell CPUs in to this category and make good money - their costs are the lowest in the business. They showed this quite clearly in Q497 with good revenue and earnings growth - from Q397 - despite aggressive price reductions on their CPUs.
