Qualcomm Plays Catch-Up On Data Delivery

By Jeremy Scott-Joynt

09-MAR-98

Qualcomm and AirTouch, a West Coast US operator, are launching trials of data transmission services over AirTouch's CDMAOne network.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ The trials are intended to test data-capable handsets for IS-95 networks, as well as examining the performance of data delivery systems using both circuit and packet-switched delivery methods.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ Qualcomm is the only IS95 vendor whose commercial range includes the capacity to carry data. Perhaps for this reason, no CDMAOne operator has implemented digital data capability at present, leaving the standard at a serious competitive disadvantage to GSM given the upsurge of interest - if not yet takeup - of wireless data services.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ Some networks are getting around the problem by overlaying Cellular Digital Packet Data networks, which has a wider footprint of suppliers, although this demands functionality beyond the core IS-95 specification.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ The tests are designed to hasten progress towards filling the gap, with the prospect for CDMAOne operators of leaping to 14.4kbps while GSM still languishes at 9.8kbps.
