In general, I have not done the analysis to say this definitively, but as a long term MSFT holder it always seems to be that way.

For 90% of its history, MSFT has traded within 20% of its all-time high. Kind of like a nice pareto graph, and MSFT has a low beta.

Norman,

MSFT is a great company, I have made money with it on long and short
portfoglio's! However, don't just follow the crowd. This is a high
tech company, and it will give you some wild ride!! If you need your
money in six months you may not want ro buy MSFT! If your
ready to buy and stick in there, then you will be happy you own MSFT
two years down the road!
