What kind of financing do you get if you combine the value of both companies? Is there an institution in the wings ready to put out money based on the value of both companies together?

It is possible that someone is making a bid for both of the companies. Why, I cannot understand, but nevertheless possible. But if so, why then trade money and shares back and forth (if that is what's happening)?
