Jim - Re: "Why do you think Compaqs inventory build up has anything to do with them using AMD chips?"

This is an indirect result, not a direct result.

Compaq tried to create a low end PC market - using AMD & Cyrix PCs - and ended up pulling the rug out from under the more expensive PCs.

Compaq has lost their corporate image as "more expensive but worth it". Now, they are seen as the K-mart of PC's (I'm borrowing a concept from Victoria Gates - "Com-Mart").

Corporate buyers are delaying purchases of Compaq PCs because they know they will get cheaper and cheaper.

Now faced with an inventory glut, they will get cheaper FASTER.

Paul

For the consumer market, most customers on the street probably will never ask what is inside the box. They will only check with the features, the size of memory, the HD ...etc.
