Meanwhile in Chi Town: Winter returns with a vengeance CHICAGO, March 9 - A massive winter storm hit the Chicago area today, shutting down the airports and knocking down trees and power poles. More than a quarter-million people around Chicago have been left without power and heat. msnbc.com And now for something completely the same: Severe weather hits Florida again March 9, 1998 - The latest round of tornadoes and thunderstorms to tear across Florida is blamed for at least one death and 14 injuries. The overnight storms damaged retirement communities, mobile home parks and campgrounds across central and south Florida. One traffic death in Tallahassee is blamed on the weather, which knocked a tree into the roadway. One person was hospitalized after 12 homes were damaged near Lake Wales in Polk County. Farther south, ten people were injured when several recreational vehicles were overturned by a tornado or strong winds at the KOA campground in Okeechobee. County schools are closed for the day. The downpours began before dawn and flooded streets and overturned a truck on Interstate 95 near Miami. Street flooding was also reported in Pasco County . o~~~ O Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas says the system will close down over 100 schools Tuesday because of power outages A one-two punch of wet, heavy snow and powerful winds hit power lines hard. At one point, some 310,000 homes, schools, and businesses had no electricity. Areas north of Chicago saw the most power outages, with over 100,000 customers in the cold. Thousands of people have been without heat for 13 hours now. ComEd says it hopes to restore most of the power by Wednesday.
