I don't think it will be as bad as all that...

1. It's too expensive to make PCs proprietary; CPQ isn't that dumb.
Also some of the CPQ officers have ditched DEC to work for CPQ... they know better than to build wonderfully engineered, expensive boxes that only a few high priests can service.

2. The Alpha chip is king of the road for anywhere from 12 to 18 months... so CPQ can flood alpha installations qith WinNT where DEC already has a foothold and Intel WinNT anywhere they're wanted. They can integrate Alpha machines with WinNT servers for enerprise solutions. CPQ will also be prepared to install faster Mercerd INtel CPUs in ALL of the installations they can.

So, even though I'm not happy with the short term info flow of negative info into the market I think technically they are on solid ground for the next couple of years.
