TOP OF THE NEWS

Ascend powers up Max 6000 will support voice, VPNs
Stephen Lawson

Ascend Communications is expected this month to introduce a beefed-up
family of remote-access concentrators designed to support value-added
services, such as voice traffic and virtual private networks (VPNs).

The move comes in response to the trend for ISPs to offer such
services as a way of differentiating themselves from the competition,

and enterprises look to these technologies as a way of cutting their
networking costs.

Sources said the Max 6000, which is expected to replace the current
Max 4000 series, will feature additional memory and processor capacity
to handle more concurrent sessions and VPN functions. Included will be
a pair of co-processors that will offload compression and encryption
tasks from the central processor. The company will also introduce a
module that will offload voice-processing functions, according to the
sources.

Some users said the limitations of the 4004, which can be equipped
with modules for four T1 or ISDN Primary Rate Interfaces, are known and
acknowledged by Ascend.

"The processors couldn't handle the interrupts if you had all 96
connections going at the same time," said Rich White, director of San
Francisco operations at Best Internet, in Mountain View, Calif. After
evaluating the 4004, Best chose another vendor's product.

Others agreed that the platform can create a bottleneck.

"We really loaded up the 4004 with ISDN, and that's where the box
pooped out," said Robert Berger, president of Internet Bandwidth
Development, a consultancy in Saratoga, Calif., and a former ISP
technology chief.

The new platform will solve this limitation, Berger said.

"Adding more processing and headroom gives it the capability to do
more value-added features, such as VPNs and voice," Berger said.

Sources said Ascend will migrate features from its higher-end
products, such as the ASX-1000 ATM backbone switch, to enhance the
feature set of its flagship Max line. Analysts said this could help the
company hold on to its leadership position against growing competition
from Cisco and other rivals.

"What the Max currently does is primarily remote LAN access, so Ascend
has a lot of opportunities to expand the capabilities of the Max into
the VPN space," said Liza Henderson, an analyst at TeleChoice, in
Verona, N.J.

Ascend's competitors, including Cisco, 3Com, and Lucent, are lining up
to provide those services. Lucent is currently beta testing cards
designed for its Livingston remote-access concentrators and routers,
which will use RISC processors to support compression and encryption
using a range of protocols.

However, Berger said that despite looming competition from Cisco's
AS5200, 3Com's Total Control hub, and Lucent's Livingston PortMaster
products, no vendor yet has surpassed Ascend's technology.

"Between the 6000 and the [Max] TNT they'll have a good lineup of
products that can terminate a range of central office connections,"
Berger said. "Ascend is still the best at the multiservice,
high-density stuff."

Ascend Communications Inc., in Alameda, Calif., is at (510) 769-6001
or ascend.com.
