Flickerful, from reading past info. on the software code used in the 56K modems ( keep in mind the code is continuously improved ) some USR modems would drop down too far in speed as the line condition degraded...in short they were to sensitive to the line condition...or you could say, they over reacted to it. An adjustment or rewrite of a portion of the modems onboard software code was required to remedy the situation. With the code being stored on the modem in flashRam driving the DSP, all that's required is to download an updated version of the code to the modem to solve the connection speed dropback problem.

In regards to the problem the Avolon ISP said the AWRE x200 exhibited in the xDSL trial...I liken it to the above.
