Interesting Ken. We're in a cycle. We go to China via J. Hudson Taylor in the 1800's---he discovers if he dons clothes like them and lives like them---plus authentic doses of the gospel, their hearts reach out and respond---and finally presto---Communism takes over---and---whaddaya know---under persecution, millions of Chinese come to faith in Christ---more than all previous centuries combined.
In luxuriant countries, Jesus is not a passion, He is a convenient way to "get rich"---especially if you send the right ministries that are begging for money in return for prayer cloths, etc. God will send you the loot---this being the year of Jewish Jubilee, one Christian network is telling its listeners---send in the monies and God will get you out of debt---they probably are well-meaning, but the point is our "passion" is for ourselves, whereas in persecuted countries, the Christian's passion is for God.
The early Church was persecuted, but grew enormously. We read in the book of Acts that after the Church was "scattered" because of this persecution, the gospel reached out and out and out.
A beautiful Russian story is of a little old and wizened lady that was crippled and used one dedicated sanctified finger on an old and dilapidated typewriter. She would type hours each day scripture from a hoarded (illegal to be had) Bible---the paper was the backside of used paper, but the underground Church couldn't get enough of the Word of God. Now there is passion. A hero of faith, belonging to Hebrews eleven.

May God bless you and your dogsledder.
