Paul, re: Compaq strategies except for the fact that because Intel has great margins, they are capable of developing new technology . . . I really believe that Compaq does not want Intel, or any other vendor to have sufficient revenue to drive technology. Compaq thinks that this is their God given role. Let Compaq retain the value and drive the innovation! I think they are chaffed at Intel for adding value at the chip level such that it is distributed to the likes of Dell. I think they are wrong, but still I think this is at the heart of Compaq management and culture. Do you want your company's [Compaq's]future success to depend on these two perennial losers? Unfortunately I do not think this sufficiently frightens Compaq. I think that they would love to keep all their vendors very hungry. Then Compaq will dole out R & D to the most worthy vendors as it sees fit. Jeff
