Thanks Paul,

<< They will port Solaris to the IA64 Merced architecture - to run on Merced servers manufactured by x86 server manufacturers - Compaq, Dell, etc.
Sun will continue to design, build and sell UltraSparc based servers and workstations, which will run, as usual, on Solaris.
Sun claims to have no interest - EVER - in making Merced-based hardware. That's what they currently say. >>

Well, wouldn't that be an interesting future...Sun watching the likes of Cpq and Dell getting a lot of the volume on a system that they provide the operating system to? If someone like Dell is so PRO-NT, do you think it would be a problem for Sun to get THEM (DELL) to make their servers compliant with Solaris? Is this paranoid thinking or will Sun have total control on this?

I seem to remember when SGI was saying they weren't going NT, then things slowly changed, and it could easily be argued that this was way too late...I wonder how many quarters/years drift by until the Sun doesn't rise as fast as it used to?

all imho

Paul, re: Sun: "In the future, I would assume they will be pragmatic enough to make what their customers demand - Sparc, Merced or whatever."

I think that Sun will make only stuff with which they can make a profit. Scott has been smart enough to let his software and hardware operations compete independently. Thus they have evolved somewhat separate strategies which I think could be stated as follows:

Software - Be the best Unix OS on the most popular platforms.

Hardware - Be the best platform for Unix.

Hense the software support for Merced.

As for Merced hardware, I have not scene or heard any interest at Sun to get into a what may become a commodity platform architecture. I doubt we will ever see Sun Merced hardware. And therefore we may see the demise of Sun hardware!
