Michael, >>>Intel may seek to take on the lucrative enterprise market dominated by Cisco Systems, Bay Networks, 3Com, and Cabletron. .....
....Competitors 3Com and Bay said it would take time for Intel to match their expertise in network-specific processors. Enterprise network managers are hesitant to turn to a new vendor for backbone products, even one as prominent as Intel.<<<

This should be a slam dunk. Intel has an enterprise system of their own connecting over 60,000 of their own employees and over 70,000 (I believe) clients. All they have to do is replicate this system for other corporations as prominent as Intel. Believe me these are cookie cutter type stuff - but CIO's make their living reinventing the wheel. That is why many of these systems are thrown out before they are even completed.

But somehow, Intel has a history of getting fouled on their way to blowing the slam dunk and then missing one of the foul shots.

I'm not absolutely sure that Craig Barrett can pull this off - he seems too much the academic ( and I'm a little worried about the fire in the belly) whereas Andy Grove is too much the street fighter with fire brimming but perhaps without the real street smarts.

As my volley ball coach use to tell me, the best players are never the ones that do everything I tell them to do - at the same time if they are completely uncoachable - they are equally not going to do well.

I would have much more confidence if either Bill Gates or Michael Dell were running this show. But, this is not to say that Andy Grove didn't do a great job bringing them this far - far from it. Going forward however, Intel has to be reinvented.

Mary

PS. Craig Barrett could be the guy and he certainly deserves this shot.
