Riven: The Sequel to Myst has sold nearly 1 million copies and should officially pass the milestone when February sales data is available.

Publisher Broderbund Software heralded its achievement on Friday, a day after the team that developed the best-selling game of 1997 announced a principal member's departure.

According to audited unit sales figures from PC Data, Reston, Va., Riven: The Sequel to Myst is approaching the 1 million mark. The game, released in October, sold almost 650,000 units during the final two months of 1997 and became the year's bestseller. The point-and-click adventure title added sales of almost 46,600 units in January. The data represent sales in 70 percent of the U.S. retail channel. A PC Data estimate that accounts for the remaining 30 percent of the channel puts Riven sales at almost 982,000 units.

At its current pace, the title would have surpassed 1 million units in February. PC Data will report February retail sales at the end of this month.

Earlier in the week, Broderbund announced one of the principal developers of Cyan, the studio that created Riven and Myst, has left the group. Robyn Miller, brother of Cyan developer Rand Miller, departed to form Land of Point, a development group that will focus on film projects. According to a press release issued by Cyan and Land of Point, both based in Spokane, Wash., the projects are unrelated to either Myst or Riven. Rand Miller will lead Cyan as it expands its Riven and Myst properties into new product areas, according to the statement.

Myst, the best-selling computer game of all time, was the second-best selling entertainment title in 1997 and the bestselling game in January 1998, according to PC Data. The original point-and-click adventure was released in 1993 for the Macintosh and in 1994 for the PC. It has sold more than 3 million units during its shelf life. Last year, Myst sold more than 608,800 copies; it added 64,400 units in January.
