In the chip market, the embassy forecast a 50 percent cancellation of facilities investment for semiconductors, but said investments for the 256-mega DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chips would be carried out as scheduled.

It added that South Korean chipmakers could only be competitive if the won/dollar rate was 1,300 or higher.

The won closed at 1,595 against the dollar on Tuesday
