China's Consumer Market Reaches US$300B

March 10, 1998 (BEIJING) -- The Chinese consumer market enjoyed stable
growth for the last five years, with the sales reaching RMB2,480 trillion
(US$298.8 billion) in 1997, according to a report by the State Statistics Bureau.
With inflation taken into consideration, the Chinese consumer market grew at an
annual rate of 10.2 percent.

The report said that the 1993-1997 period was characterized by a buyers'
market, with a survey showing that only 10 types of commodities out of 613 had a
shortage of supply in the second half of 1997.

The report said that the appearance of a buyers' market promotes the structural
readjustment of the national economy as well as reform in production and
distribution companies.
